ǰһ°Academic American Encyclopedia couvade м˵£The couvade is the custom whereby the father retires to his bed upon the birth of his offspring and imitates the actions of labor and childbirth. The term is derived for the French couver( to hatch ). The couvade is found primarily in nonliterate societiesbut it was also found in Europe. The stated purpose of the custom commonly is given as protecting the child from supernatural or ritual danger, but it also enables the father to show his erjipathy for the mothers childbirth role and to express general identification with the female role and with the newborn. In an extreme form of the couvade the new mother gets up to take care of the fatherresulting in complete role reversal.
