ء˹Albert Mathiezʦѵȴһӱī˾18741932French historian, an authority on the French Revolution. He studied under Aulard, whose scientific method he adopted, though it led him to different conclusions. Mathiezs chief work, La Revolution frangaise (3 vols.1922-27 Eng. tr.1928)followed substantially the socialist interpretation, which viewed the French Revolution as the product of the class struggle and of economic necessity. His arguments and presentation, however, were unbiased enough to permit the royalist historian, Pierre Gaxotte, to use much of Mathiez's work to support entirely opposite conclusions. Mathiez extolled Robespierre, belittled Danton, and considered the Thermidorian reaction after Robespierre's fall in 1794 as the triumph of the bourgeoisie over the working class. Among Mathiezs other works are Autour de Robespierre ( 1925 Eng. tr.The Fall of Robespierre 1927) ,La Reaction thermidorienne (1929)and other more specialized studies of the revolutionary period. Although Mathiezs interpretation was put to use by the French Socialistsnotably JauresMathiez himself was not a party member.
